Partnered Up For A Decade Are Activision And Bungie

A 10 year distribution deal has been announced in a move as surprising as the Master Chief unmasking on “Halo,” video game giants Activision and Bungie. The Activision Bungie deal will give Activision “exclusive worldwide rights to publish and distribute.” This could lead to quite the guaranteed loans for Activision, and Bungie gets to keep its intellectual property rights. This deal, while maintaining game quality, should bring Bungie’s games to more platforms.

A partnership between Bungie and Activision

Today on the Bungie Blog, they announced specific details of the Bungie Activision partnership. Bungie, a game developer that is best-known for creating the “Halo” series for XBox, has been working on an as-of-yet unannounced “Intellectual Property” that is most likely a new video game. The Bungie Activision partnership is based on this new intellectual property. The Halo series, including the new game “Halo Reach,” will continue to be developed and distributed by Bungie and Microsoft’s 343 Industries.

Activision and Bungie to work on distribution

The deal between Activision and Bungie has been in development for nine full months. Activision is a “third party” video game publisher that specializes in creating multi-platform video games. Bungie games have, in the past, been available only on Microsoft’s Xbox system. By partnering with Activision, Bungie will most likely be bringing its new games to XBox, Playstation, PC and perhaps other video gaming platforms.

Activision lawsuit concerns avoided by Bungie

The deal between Bungie and Activision seems to have come at a time that Activision is facing a multi-million dollar lawsuit based on the release of “Modern Warfare 2.” The legal problems of the Activision/Infinity Ward group affect the game development divisions of Activision. The deal between Bungie and Activision looks like it will make use of Bungie’s game development and Activision’s distribution – effectively shoring up each of the company’s weakest point. The Bungie/Activision partnership will either way make some exciting news in the next 10 years of video gaming.
